The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, also known as the Chen Clan Academy, serves as a beacon of traditional Chinese architecture, art, and history. Opened in 1894, this exquisite complex was designed not only as a residence for members of the Chen family preparing for imperial examinations but also as a vibrant center for cultural and academic exchange. Today, it houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, showcasing intricate artworks such as wood carvings, stone carvings, and pottery that encapsulate the essence of Lingnan culture. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall or Chen Clan Academy is an academic temple in Guangzhou, which is praised as the Pearl of Lingnan architectural art. The temple also functions as a museum under the auspices of Guangdong Folk Arts Museum, exhibiting a variety of folk arts and crafts.

In 2002 and 2011 it was chosen as one of the Top Eight Sights of Guangzhou. Filled with strong cultural and artistic features, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall will give you a ticket to a biggest family in Guangzhou during the Qing Dynasty (1644~1912). The Forbidden City is the display of the imperial architectural art, and the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is a show of folk architectural art. In 1959, the People’s Government converted the Chen Clan Academy into the Guangdong Museum of Folk Arts, which collects, studies and displays folk handicrafts made in Guangdong and the rest of the country during the bygone dynasties.

However, if it’s a new or emerging term, it might have been coined recently to describe a new technology, a new trend in art or fashion, or a new social movement. In that case, the origin would be linked to the people or circumstances that led to its creation. For instance, a group of young artists might have created the term ‘bdote’ to represent their unique style of painting that combines traditional and modern techniques. As mentioned before, without clear knowledge of what ‘bdote’ is, it’s impossible to share detailed information about its origin. It could be a term from a far – off region with a very specific cultural or historical background. Maybe it’s a name given to a place or a thing in a language that is not widely known.

The heads of the stone handrails on the platform in front of Juxian Hall were vividly carved into trays of pineapples, immortal peaches, finger citrons and carambola starfruit, all native to Guangdong Province. All of its beams and pillars are intricately carved, while the giant middle wooden screen with exquisite engravings is a national treasure. Juxian (Talent Gathering) Hall in the central courtyard is the complex’s main building, a place for the Chen clan’s seniors to discuss business and, long ago, hold sacrificial ceremonies. Granite was used to build parts of the complex that were susceptible to erosion from winter weather and rain – in the forms of guarding lions, platform bases, stairs and posts. Each piece of wood in Chen’s academy was engraved and embossed with historical anecdotes and auspicious patterns. The gorgeous gray and pottery sculptures on the roof are only the “tip of the iceberg” in the architectural art of Chen Ancestral Hall.

Of course, those who paid for the hall could also get accommodation here when they come to Guangzhou. Departing from the Baiyun Lake, it takes about 15 minutes to go to an ancient hall by car- Peace and Prosperity Academy, one of the provincial-level cultural relic protection units. It is an ancestral-hall-like architecture with three courtyards and five bedrooms. The current site was built in the 22nd year of the reign of Emperor Daoguang (1842), initiated by Li Fang, a first-degree scholar in Shijing Village.
