Charli XCX’s ‘Brat’ Cover Art Took 5 Months to Make: Designer Us Weekly
Harness the simplicity and style of Brat Generator to create unique album cover-style images. As well as the three artists above, Sivan is on the remix album too, as are names like Ariana Grande, The Japanese House and Julian Casablancas. Charli XCX’s ‘Brat’ album cover might be one of the most iconic images of 2024, but she’s revealed that she made it in order to save money. Kamala HQ’s X account has also started to repost memes (which often feature a recognisable image or video clip, paired with a witty caption or phrase) and swear words.
Charli’s tweet also led to fans creating memes of Harris’ popular coconut tree quote with tracks from the album playing in the background. While it may not have been her intention, Charli’s tweet led to Harris amassing popularity amongst the young generation of voters. The idea that a presidential candidate could identify with Gen Z has given hope to young voters, spreading the notion that their voice matters in the election. While there has been discourse on whether Harris truly embodies brat, there’s no arguing that her brat-inspired marketing move had a tremendously beneficial effect on her campaign.
There are countless charts and services and data dumps that measure streams and memes and airplay and anything else you can count. But none of them can fully explain “Brat Summer” — the cultural phenomenon surrounding British singer-songwriter Charli xcx’s latest studio album, “Brat,” that has stretched well past summer and into next year. “Leo” is “Club Classics.” Charli XCX is a Leo Sun Sign, which beams all throughout this album, but if we’re breaking it down into twelve distinct astrological assignations, “Club Classics” has got to be Leo.
Taking to her private Instagram account, Charli described Brat as intentionally provocative in design. Its cover was meant to be very provocative, featuring a lot of text. She wrote, “The artwork for Brat will be obnoxious, arrogant, and bold. Some people will hate it. [The cover] will be heavily text-based, either font on a plain background or painted on a wall or disregarded object.” When I first saw the cover art for Charli XCX’s Brat, I was repulsed. And then I realized that the ugliness was part of its bizarre appeal.
This is not dance music with an eye toward history, à la Beyoncé’s Renaissance. The moments of reflection (“Rewind,” “Girl, so confusing”) are about the self and her relation to people in her immediate life. The future is even less relevant; the penultimate track “I think about it all the time” questions whether that life is all that it’s cracked up to be, or whether she wants to slow down and have a child. But these anxieties are not dwelt upon; the final track, “365,” argues that there is no tomorrow. Charli had won her fans’ hearts and bodies with her project—their minds might be an afterthought. In addition to the phenomena surrounding the album, brat is an exceptional album on its own.
“I Love It,” released in May 2012, became a global smash, topping the charts in the U.K. When we all look back on this era, will brat green be remembered as the color of 2024? “I don’t religiously keep up with color of the year, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going to be looking this year,” Charli laughs.
(She’s so Julia.) Her crowds were only getting bigger and more devout. Charli threw an album release concert on June 10 in Brooklyn that attracted even bigger names; Lorde and The 1975’s Matty Healy were there. But Brat Summer, as it came to be known, was around the corner, and brat.generator it would expand from the internet and the clubs to the real world. Taylor Swift has been on her Eras Tour since March 2023, but it’s all coming to an end on December 8.
Breaking News, Entertainment, Exclusive Interviews & More. “Thank you so much for all the love and support you have all shown for this music, this campaign and for me,” she wrote via Instagram, adding, “At my most pure, my most Charli, my most brat.” Part of that process, Freaney explained to the Times, was combing through “500 different shades of green” and looking for inspiration everywhere – even in the mundane moments of everyday life.
Strauss credits the virality of brat green to being “symbolic of the whole tone of the album.” As she further elaborates, “being brat can mean so many things. At its core it’s bold, it’s a little messy, but there’s something about it that’s quite chic and I want to hang it on my wall.” Like so many of us, now all O’Connor sees is brat green. “I’ll be on a hike and think ‘oop not these trees giving brat,’” he says. “It’s ultimately become the color of internet brain rot, which I think is beautiful.” From Charli’s personal point of view, brat green is “eye-catching in all the wrong ways” and that’s exactly what she loves about it.
Adjust the font color or background color using the available options to personalize your image and make it uniquely yours. Open up Instagram and there she is in an Acne Studios ad, or an actually quite funny Google spot with Sivan where they’re shooting a video using products they bought on ShopWithGoogle. Walk down the street in a metropolis and that gross shade of green, on a bus or someone’s jacket, evokes “Brat” even if it has nothing to do with it.
